Every one of the four Gospels says the first people to find the tomb empty were women. That single detail is one of the strongest reasons historians take the resurrection accounts seriously. Because in the first century, it was the last detail anyone inventing the story would have chosen. I have taught the Bible for years, and the detail in the resurrection accounts I find most convincing is the one no one would ever have planned. Here is what almost no one notices. In the first century, a woman's testimony carried almost no weight. In a Jewish court, women generally could not serve as legal witnesses at all. Their word was treated as unreliable. This was not a small prejudice. It was written into the courts and the customs of the entire culture. So if you were inventing a story about a man rising from the dead, and you wanted it believed, you would never make women your first witnesses. You would choose men. Respected men. Leaders. The kind of witnesses a first-century audience would actually trust. The Gospel writers did the opposite. Every one of the four accounts says the first people to discover the empty tomb, and the first to see the risen Jesus, were women. Mary Magdalene is named first, account after account. If the story were a careful invention, this is the one detail you would never include. It actively weakened the case in front of the very people they were trying to convince. They included it anyway. Which is exactly what you would expect if they were not inventing it, but reporting what actually happened. And it is not only the women. The Gospel writers had every opportunity to make themselves look good. Instead they recorded their own failure in detail. They wrote that the disciples fled when Jesus was arrested. That Peter, their leader, denied even knowing him three times. That when the women brought word of the empty tomb, the men did not believe them. That Thomas refused to accept it until he could put his hand in the wounds himself. These are the men who became the leaders of the early church. And they wrote themselves as cowards, deserters, and doubters. People crafting a heroic legend do not write themselves as the fools of the story. People telling the truth do, because that is simply how it happened. There is one more thing, and it is the easiest of all to overlook. About twenty years after the crucifixion, the apostle Paul wrote a letter to the church in Corinth. In it he repeats what scholars widely believe was already a fixed creed, recited by the earliest Christians within just a few years of the events themselves. It lists the people who saw the risen Jesus. And then Paul writes something remarkable. He says Jesus appeared to more than five hundred people at one time, and then adds that most of them are still alive. Sit with what that is. It is an open invitation to check. He is effectively saying the witnesses are still here. Go and ask them. You do not write that into a story you are making up. You write that when you are certain the witnesses will back you, because they are real, and they are still around to be questioned. None of this, on its own, forces a conclusion. History can show you that the earliest Christians sincerely believed they had seen Jesus alive. That they recorded it with an honesty that worked against them. That they pointed to witnesses who could still be questioned. What you do with that is yours to weigh. But most of us were never shown any of it. We were handed the story with none of the world it happened inside of. In all my years of teaching, the thing that helped people most was never a clever sermon. It was giving them the context first. Who wrote a book, when, why, what was happening in the world at the time, and how the pieces connect. The resurrection stops being a familiar Sunday story and starts landing with its full weight the moment you understand what the people who first told it were risking to tell it. That is true of almost every page of the Bible. The meaning is not hidden. The context is just missing. Here is the honest part. A lot of this context does exist if you go looking.
