As my son is moving into higher elementary, I’ve noticed he’s expected to demonstrate understanding in more conceptual ways, often through writing (even in math ). While he is a creative thinker, he struggles somewhat with written expression so this has made school feel more challenging for him. Research shows that students with Attention‑Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder experience written-expression impairments at rates of about 22%, and those impairments significantly predict academic outcomes even after controlling for intelligence and attention. (The Written Expression Abilities of Adolescents with ADHD; Molitor et al., 2016) I know the only way he will build writing skills is through practice, but if you have a child with ADHD you know motivating them to do those “non preferred” tasks can feel impossible. I was thrilled when I found night zookeeper! It’s basically a personal writing tutor (so I don’t have to be), giving him visual prompts, structure and feedback, so he gets engaged without the power struggle.
